Sleep Training

Jonas hasn't learned to fully appreciate that blissfully restful state of existence otherwise known as sleep yet. It's so funny (and not at the same time) to see the ways that dear silly boy fights to keep himself awake. He'll kick his legs as fast as he can (kicking off his blankets in the process), if his eyes are closing against his will he rapidly shakes his head back and forth (there is a bald patch on the back of his head to prove it), and if he has already fallen asleep in Matt or I's arms he will stretch and arc his back as soon as we transfer him to the crib.

I on the other hand have an excessive love of sleep. And Matt likes it moderately. So we began sleep training Jonas a couple weeks ago in the hopes of obtaining more sleep. It's been sort of informal and a little inconsistent thus far but we've had some success at night (he's had a few 7-8 hour stretches of sleep) and very little success in regards to naps.

  1. We started and finished this hellish process last week. I say finished because we have totally given up!! Right now it seems that Haylen has his own schedual and is not willing to deviate. Ferberizing did not work for us. But, it sounds like you have some really good ideas! I particularily like the 2-3-4 rule. I'm excited to see how it works for you and maybe adapt a few for us. Good luck!!

p.s.what is this "Sleep Sheep" all about?

  2. It's the sheep pictured below the post. It plays four different sounds- whales, rain, ocean, and a babbling stream for 20 or 45 minutes to help put babies to sleep. Jonas also likes to play with it on the side of his crib.

  4. Good luck from us also! I hope it works out. Hailey just started sleeping through the night at 10 mths old. Jonas will not be as stubborn I am sure :) Hopefully swimming lessons don't interfere with nap time!

  5. Royall, you should have seen Malakye sleep in the magical room downstairs...the secret is it's 1. dark, 2. quiet, and 3. there is a calming 'white' noise coming from the utility room next store. We've had good luck there with Jacob, Scarlet, and Malakye, and moderate luck with Jonas I think you said. Keep at it...it will be worth it. Sarra and Tim are BIG in favor of sleep training. You want to be sane, right? Love you!
